Healthy breakfast ideas: 30 recipes with calories and protein per serving

Here are 30 healthy breakfast ideas, one serving each: 6 egg and tofu breakfasts, such as a spinach and feta omelette; 6 oat breakfasts, such as strawberry overnight oats; 6 smoothies, such as a berry Greek yogurt smoothie; 6 yogurt and cottage cheese bowls; and 6 to make ahead, such as egg muffins or a breakfast burrito. Every one has at least 20 g of protein and 80 g of fruit, vegetables or legumes, and lists its ingredients in grams, a few steps and its calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat computed from USDA data.

What makes a breakfast healthy on this list?

On this list, a breakfast is healthy when one serving passes the IZeat healthy check: at least 20 g of protein and at least 80 g of fruit, vegetables or legumes, both computed from its grams, and the page checks every recipe against it. The ranking lists of healthy breakfasts, such as Love and Lemons' 57 recipes in 11 groups or Downshiftology's 57 in 9, give no number for "healthy" and no calories or protein per recipe (both checked October 28, 2026). This page gives both, and uses the definition the Recipes section states.

80 g is what the NHS counts as one portion of fresh, canned or frozen fruit and vegetables; the NHS counts sweet potatoes but not potatoes, and counts juice and smoothies only up to 150 ml a day. In the check, the fruit in a smoothie is weighed like any other, avocado counts as a fruit, beans count as legumes and tofu is not counted. 20 g of protein is the floor the high protein meals list uses. Sodium, saturated fat and added sugar are not computed, so their limits are not checked; the recipes add no sugar beyond a spoon of honey on two bowls.

Each recipe is for one serving: the ingredients in grams, then a few steps under its name below each table. Calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat are added up from those grams with the values per 100 g of USDA FoodData Central, SR Legacy, for the generic food, not a brand. Cooking oil is counted where a recipe uses it; salt, herbs and spices are not, except the cinnamon, which is weighed. A protein powder's label can differ from the USDA whey figure: check the one you use.

IZeat wrote these recipes and computed their figures from USDA values; creators' tested versions will replace them as they are published.

How does a healthy breakfast fit into your day?

A breakfast is one part of a day. The 30 breakfasts here range from 198 to 513 kcal per serving; how many calories and how much protein suit you depends on your age, size and activity, and the calorie calculator and the protein intake calculator give a reference. This page sets no target.

IZeat is the five-star chef calorie tracker that suggests satisfying, great-tasting meals, so you enjoy every calorie you have left. It works inside ChatGPT, Claude or any other assistant: IZeat knows your numbers for the day, which foods fill you up and what you like.

After you connect your assistant, say your breakfast in one sentence. IZeat logs the meal and returns calories, protein, carbohydrate and fat for the day, with the source of each figure; the same breakfast tomorrow is one sentence too.

“Breakfast: strawberry overnight oats, 40 g of oats, 150 g of skim milk, 100 g of nonfat Greek yogurt, 10 g of chia seeds and 100 g of strawberries. Log it.”

Where are the breakfast lists for a specific need?

Recipes with at least 20 g of protein for every meal of the day are on the high protein meals list, meals of 500 kcal or less on the low calorie meals list, and snacks from 10 g of protein on the high protein snacks list. Lunches that pass the same check are on the healthy lunch ideas list, and dinners on the healthy dinner ideas list. Recipes to cook once and keep in the fridge for several days are on the meal prep ideas list, and the weekly meal plan guide shows how to plan a week with them. Breakfasts with at least 30 g of protein per serving are on the high protein breakfast list, and smoothies that blend whole fruit or vegetables with a protein food, each with its figures, on the healthy smoothie recipes list. Other breakfast lists by need each get their own page in the Recipes section as they are published:

  • Low calorie high protein breakfast keeps the protein high and the calories low.
  • Protein pancakes, with at least 20 g of protein per serving, and the protein waffle recipe.
  • High protein overnight oats and protein oats push the protein of an oat breakfast higher.
  • Breakfast meal prep and breakfast burrito meal prep cook breakfasts once for the week.
  • The protein muffins recipe bakes muffins with more protein.

Frequently asked questions

What is the healthiest breakfast to eat?

No single breakfast is the healthiest for everyone; a breakfast with a protein food and fruit or vegetables is a sound start. Spinach, tomato and feta omelette with toast (400 kcal, 26.2 g of protein), strawberry overnight oats with chia (342 kcal, 22.8 g of protein), berry Greek yogurt smoothie (211 kcal, 21.5 g of protein), Greek yogurt parfait with berries and walnuts (294 kcal, 24.7 g of protein) and spinach and pepper egg muffins (280 kcal, 27.6 g of protein) each pass the IZeat healthy check, with at least 20 g of protein and 80 g of fruit, vegetables or legumes per serving. All 30 breakfasts on this page do; 29 are vegetarian, 1 of them vegan.

What are some quick healthy breakfast ideas?

Breakfasts that need no cooking are the quickest: strawberry overnight oats with chia, peanut butter banana overnight oats, berry Greek yogurt smoothie, green smoothie with spinach, banana and whey and peanut butter banana protein smoothie, among 15 on this page. Smoothies take a blender, yogurt bowls a spoon, and overnight oats are mixed the evening before.

Is oatmeal a healthy breakfast?

Oatmeal is a good base, but on its own it is short on protein: 40 g of rolled oats, dry, 200 g of skim milk, 100 g of banana make 13.1 g of protein. Adding Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs or whey brings it to 20 g or more; the 6 oat breakfasts on this page do that, from 22.8 to 25.7 g.

What is a healthy breakfast to eat every morning?

Any breakfast on this page can be eaten every morning: each has at least 20 g of protein and 80 g of fruit, vegetables or legumes per serving. What changes is the work it asks on a weekday: 15 need no cooking, overnight oats and chia pudding are mixed the evening before, and the 6 make-ahead breakfasts, such as spinach and pepper egg muffins, are cooked once for several mornings.
