Estimate

An estimate is a figure reasoned out from what is known when the exact value cannot be measured, and it is honest only when it is called an estimate. IZeat records an estimated item with the source estimate, shows it as an estimate in every reply and on every screen, and never lets one look like a weighed value.

A homemade dish, a restaurant plate, a portion nobody weighed: the assistant estimates, but only after asking what changes the figure by more than a third, the fat something was cooked in, raw or cooked weight, the size of the portion. A photo of a plate tells what the food is; it cannot tell how much is on it, so it gets questions before any number. A meal is as certain as its least certain item, and the reply names the estimated items when only some are.

The community that left other trackers hates the estimate that hides, not the estimate itself; the r/loseit test that measured plate photos found errors of twenty to fifty percent on portions, and its author's own advice was to keep the description, the brands and the weights over the picture. IZeat follows that advice: it asks before it estimates, it says estimated on every reply that carries one, and the web app never shows an estimated figure as a weighed one.

Put it into practice: Estimates and sources.
