Period average

A period average is the mean of daily totals over a range of days, counted over the days that have entries rather than over the calendar. IZeat's period summary gives the average per recorded day, how many days of the period have entries, and the target that was in force, on a chart where a missing day is a gap and never a zero.

Averaging over the calendar would count an unlogged day as zero and flatter the figure; IZeat divides by recorded days only and says how many there were. Daily rows run through thirty-one days, weekly averages through a year, monthly averages beyond; the target timeline is drawn as a step line where it changed. The reply names the range it covers and when the history starts.

Averages hide as much as they show, so IZeat shows the count next to the figure: fourteen recorded days out of twenty-eight is a different fact from twenty-seven, even at the same average. The target timeline is drawn alongside, because a target that changed mid-period would otherwise make a steady month look like a drift.

Put it into practice: Reading a period.
