Open Food Facts

Open Food Facts is a free, open database of packaged food products and their label figures, built by volunteers who photograph packaging, and published under the Open Database License. IZeat takes its label figures from the label the customer has in hand, read and checked by the assistant, so the record holds what the packaging says today rather than a copy of it.

The database's two licence conditions are attribution and share-alike: using the data is free, and publicly using an adapted version of the database requires offering that version under the same licence. That matters to any product that would build on it, and it is why IZeat keeps a source on every item: a figure read from a label is a label figure, and nothing is blended into a database of IZeat's own. A custom user agent and rate limits apply to its API.

Open Food Facts is the right kind of source for a product that names where every number came from: open, attributed, checkable by anyone. It is also volunteer data, with the errors that implies, and IZeat prefers the label read directly, by a reader that notices when the figures disagree. The customer sees on each item whether the figure is a label's, a table's, their own or an estimate.
