Reference values

Reference values are the calories and macros of a plain, unmixed food per 100 g or 100 ml, as published in a standard food composition table. IZeat marks an item as reference when a customer weighed a plain food and the assistant valued it from a standard table, and treats that figure as a measurement, not an estimate.

A plain food the customer weighed, a vegetable, a fruit, rice, a chicken breast, has a known composition; 80 g of steamed sweet potato is not a guess the way a homemade dish is. The assistant scales the table's per-100 g figures to the weight said and records the item with the source reference. The figure is as certain as one the customer read out or gave; only a mixed dish, a restaurant plate or a portion that had to be guessed is an estimate.

Reference values are what most trackers mean by their database, and they are only as honest as the match: pick the wrong of ten entries for one chicken breast and the day is off by a quarter. IZeat has no search box; the assistant names the food, the customer's weight is the quantity, and the source is recorded as reference so the figure is never mistaken for a guess about the portion. The portion is the customer's; the table only supplies the density.

Put it into practice: Estimates and sources.
