Per serving

Per serving is the second way labels state figures, for an amount the producer chose as a serving, which is often smaller than what a person eats and differs from one product to the next. IZeat records the amount actually eaten and lets the assistant convert a per-serving figure through the serving's stated weight, keeping "one serving" or "half the pack" as the customer's words next to the grams.

A per-serving figure is only usable with the serving's weight, which the label gives somewhere on the panel; the assistant reads both and scales to what was eaten. When the customer says "one serving" and the serving is 30 g, the record holds 30 g and its figures, source label; when they say "the whole pack" of 90 g, the record holds 90 g. The words stay so a later reading knows which it was.

Servings are where honest people under-count without noticing: cereal servings are smaller than bowls and oil servings smaller than pours, and a package can hold two and a half of them. IZeat's insistence on grams is the remedy, and the assistant's habit of saying the conversion back is the check. A customer who weighs once knows their serving for good.

Put it into practice: Logging a meal.
